Maintaining a Business Blog, Part 2: Three Tips to Simplify the Process
Now that we’ve established the importance of maintaining a business blog, it’s time to show you that the process is much less intimidating than it sounds. It could be that very idea of producing a weekly essay gives you the heebie jeebies. If that’s the case, know that you’re not alone.
But please read on.
Remember these three tips to simplify the process:
- Get a jump start. About one month before you plan to roll out your business blog, begin a running list of likely topics. If feasible, meet with your team to brainstorm, writing down all possible ideas. Then keep the list handy and add to it whenever inspiration strikes. Do not depend on yourself to remember all of your good ideas from week to week. About three weeks before your first post goes live, open a folder on your desktop and write a few articles ahead of time. Keeping ahead of the curve will one day prove invaluable: remember that occasional bouts of illness, busyness, or lack of inspiration may keep you from writing on any given week.
- Bring in occasional guest bloggers. Nobody knows better than you that you are not an expert in all possible areas. Asking a friend, colleague, or even competitor (!) to guest post on your blog will not only encourage excellence but will also provide networking opportunities and promote goodwill among those in your field. Just remember to make your request four to six weeks in advance, giving your guest blogger plenty of time to nail his ideas to the page.
- Don’t try to write a novel. Although you should do your due diligence with spell check, grammar check, and proofreading, remember that nobody expects you to be Margaret Atwood. While the debate regarding recommended blog post length may be ongoing, most experts suggest only writing between 250-500 words per post. Remember, people are busy. Many of them read on the go, coffee in hand. In skimming your business blog, they are not looking for deep insight to change their lives: they’re looking for quick, informative sound bytes that will enhance what they’re already doing.
As we’ve seen, there are distinct benefits for those who choose to maintain a business blog. It is my hope that by implementing the three steps above, you will find the process surprisingly attainable.
